The Healthcare Growth Playbook
The Framework

Access → Activation → Adoption → Retention

Healthcare organizations spend heavily on expanding access, but access alone doesn’t drive results. Providers don’t always change behavior, patients don’t always act, and growth doesn’t always follow. This framework names the four stages between a covered benefit and lasting impact, so you can find where yours is stuck.

  1. 1
    Access Coverage & availability
  2. 2
    Activation Awareness & enablement
  3. 3
    Adoption Behavior change
  4. 4
    Retention Sustained utilization
Stage 1 · Coverage & availability

Access

The benefit, product or service exists, and the people who need it are eligible and able to reach it.

From my work 2.8M members whose network access was restored through an award-winning health plan campaign

Where it breaks

Teams treat a signed contract, a network listing or a regulatory clearance as the finish line. Access is the starting line.

Levers

  • Clear, current network and coverage status
  • Simple eligibility and “how to get it” messaging
  • Less friction in finding and scheduling care

What to measure

  • Eligible members or patients
  • Network and coverage status
  • Time from eligibility to first opportunity to use
Stage 2 · Awareness & enablement

Activation

The people who influence use (benefits managers, referring providers, account teams) know the offering and can explain it with confidence.

From my work 6,000+ benefits managers equipped through a partner enablement toolkit

Where it breaks

Launch materials go out once, and then the people closest to members and patients can’t say why the offering matters or how to use it.

Levers

  • Partner and benefits manager toolkits
  • Sales playbooks, battlecards and training
  • Messaging tailored to each audience

What to measure

  • Awareness among target audiences
  • Use of enablement content
  • Partner and referral source engagement
Stage 3 · Behavior change

Adoption

Providers change how they order or refer, and patients take the first real step.

From my work 50% growth in physician adoption of an FDA-cleared diagnostic platform

Where it breaks

Awareness doesn’t change habits. Providers stick with what they know and patients put things off. This is the hardest gap to close and the one most often skipped.

Levers

  • Clinical education that fits the audience’s evidence bar
  • Less effort at the moment of decision
  • Targeted, multi-channel activation campaigns

What to measure

  • First-use rate among eligible people
  • Ordering and referral rates
  • Conversion from aware to active
Stage 4 · Sustained utilization

Retention

People keep using it after the launch ends, and that is when outcomes and revenue appear.

From my work 40% utilization growth in six months through member activation programs

Where it breaks

The launch campaign ends, attention moves on, and use quietly drops back to where it started.

Levers

  • Lifecycle communication after first use
  • Voice-of-customer and win/loss feedback loops
  • Reporting value back to plan and employer partners

What to measure

  • Repeat and ongoing utilization
  • Year-over-year patient actions
  • Revenue per eligible member
