Healthcare organizations spend significant time, resources, and energy expanding access. They negotiate contracts, launch new services, enter new markets, build partnerships, and invest in programs designed to connect more people to care.
But gaining access is only the beginning.
A health plan can add a provider to its network, but that does not guarantee patients will use that provider. A health system can introduce a new service, but that does not mean physicians will refer patients to it. An organization can launch an innovative program, but awareness alone does not create adoption.
There is often a gap between what healthcare organizations make available and what people actually use.
That gap is where The Healthcare Growth Playbook begins.
Moving Beyond Access
Throughout my career in healthcare marketing, I have become increasingly interested in what happens after access is established.
How do we turn a new partnership into utilization? How do we influence provider behavior? How do we help patients understand their options and take action? And, ultimately, how do healthcare organizations translate strategy into measurable, sustainable growth?
Those questions led to a simple framework:
Access → Activation → Adoption → Retention
Access creates the opportunity through coverage and availability.
Activation builds awareness and equips patients, providers, and other stakeholders with the information they need to act.
Adoption turns that awareness into behavior change.
Retention transforms initial action into sustained utilization and long-term impact.
Each stage matters because healthcare growth rarely happens simply because something becomes available.
A contract signed is not the same as a provider changing referral behavior. A new benefit is not the same as a patient using it. A campaign launched is not the same as measurable growth.
The work between those moments matters.
What You'll Find Here
The Healthcare Growth Playbook is a space to explore that work.
We’ll examine healthcare growth through the intersection of strategy, marketing, operations, access, patient and provider engagement, and health equity—with a particular focus on translating big ideas into real-world impact.
You can expect perspectives on healthcare trends, breakdowns of growth strategies, practical frameworks, lessons from industry leaders, and conversations about the barriers that prevent good healthcare strategies from producing their intended outcomes.
Some topics will focus on organizations and growth. Others will examine the patient experience, community health, access to care, or emerging healthcare trends. The common thread will be a simple question:
How do we move from strategy to action—and from action to impact?
Building the Playbook
Healthcare is too complex for growth to be reduced to a single campaign, contract, technology, or tactic.
It requires understanding how the pieces connect.
That is why this platform is called a playbook. There isn't one answer for every organization or every community. Instead, there are strategies, frameworks, lessons, data, and ideas that healthcare leaders can use to make better decisions.
The Healthcare Growth Playbook will continue evolving as those conversations evolve.
Because access matters.
But access isn't the outcome. It's where the work begins.
